'I want to make films that are fun but not frivolous'

Bollywood director Karan Johar has never shied away from experimenting. From themes like ‘loving your parents’ to ‘loving another man’s wife’, he has tried it all. Sometimes it worked, at other times it didn’t but that never deterred Johar. With a new television show and a film in the New Year, he is a busy man once again. The filmmaker tells Insiya Amir why his cinema would never be just a message and why he is comfortable with certain kind of issues.

Excerpts from the interview:

Your movies have dealt with a variety of themes — from extra-marital relationships to homosexuality to Islam. What will be next?

Maybe after all those deviations I will go back to a happy family saga, a multi-star family story. I miss those. It is always fine to shock your system but I want to go back to something that is fun and soppy, but never frivolous. I may even do a song-and-dance routine — I miss having 100 dancers dancing in a row in my films. I have done my bit of shocking everyone. Now, let me go back to doing something conventional because that does seem to meet audience demands.

And going back to the formula has something to do with the fact that your previous ones have not been commercially so successful?

Nothing to do with that. Films connect if they have to and don’t if they don’t have to. I am proud of every film I produce. I am very proud of Kurbaan as well. Probably, it was too heavy and topical to go down well with the mass market. Maybe, the mistake there lies in the budgeting and not the film.

After your last show on television, you now have a new one, Lift Kara De. Do you see your association with TV continuing?

I love doing television. I did Koffee With Karan as a hobby. I thought that I talk so much, I might as well get paid for it! The show was really me in intimate conversations with some of my friends who are also celebrities. This new show is a totally different concept. It has, of course, dollops of entertainment, but also a huge dose of nobility attached to it. I can’t reveal too much about the concept but it is definitely something that is not me. Koffee was niche; this one is more mainstream.

Talking about mainstream, you have been associated with choosing bold topics, but do you think Hindi films will ever mature? Will we ever see socially-relevant films being made in Bollywood?

I am going to do my bit. I don’t want to set a trend, I don’t want to follow a trend either. How will I set myself apart if I keep doing things to emulate others or with the intention of creating a trend? You can never create a trend. A trend gets set. One does what one has to do. Whether or not it is followed, is not for me to worry about. My endeavour is to make films that make a difference. I would hate to produce a completely pointless film that does not serve any purpose or say anything — whether it is a brain dead entertainer or just a pointless entertainer. That is not what I am about. I am privileged to be in a position where I can use cinema as a platform to do interesting things. And if I don’t take advantage of this platform, then how dare I be a filmmaker?

If you have a point to make, then why do you limit yourself to the rich and the upper-middle class? Why do you bypass India’s burgeoning middle class or for that matter the people who live in the underbelly?

That is a perception that you might have, or the media has. Of course, I am more comfortable with a certain zone that I understand. But having said that, I am also completely capable of dabbling with different demographics and topography. Sometimes, you get tied up with the kind of content that you’ve done but sometimes you get unfairly typecast. I have always been associated with bubblegum movies, but actually the only such movie I have ever made is Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. People say, ‘oh he makes family films’, but I have only made one family film. People tend to generalize for the wrong reasons.

So, will you ever venture away from streets of Manhattan to the hills of Chhattisgarh where a war is going on between the state and Maoist rebels?

I don’t know. I make movies on issues that have moved me. But I will never make a film just for the sake of sending a message or one that is ‘well-intended’.

Your next movie is about a Muslim abroad. What about the plight of Indian Muslims, in Gujarat, for instance?

The film has nothing to do with religion or with a community. It is to do with a man. Unlike the perception around it, it is not a movie about terrorism; it is not a movie about a religion. It is about humanity.

So far, you have worked with a limited cast. A filmmaker in your position can give a break to new, budding actors. Why don’t you give newcomers a chance?

I have been accused of not launching new actors. I have done better than that, I have launched new directors. I want to know how many companies do that. I cast according to the role. I am accused of casting SRK all the time. I say why not? He is one of the hugest stars in the country, one of the best actors we have. He has a great comfort zone with me, and he is accessible, affable and amiable to me. I would be really stupid not to constantly leverage that.

Discovery Travel & Living trailed Shah Rukh Khan for over a year to put together a special ten-part series on the superstar. An exclusive glimpse into the first two episodes – a London vacation & Mumbai 24x7.

Much as I love Mumbai and Delhi and India, I think London would be my next favourite place on earth. I like the weather, the greenness, the cold. Normally I come here for work and holidays but I love coming here. There were two places in the world which my mom wanted me to see, one was Madame Tussauds in London and the other was the Louvre in Paris. So it’s the greatest moment and achievement of my life that I am in Madame Tussauds. She would have been very proud.

When I’m in London, I go to Hyde Park to play soccer with my kids and their friends. I don’t play unfair. Aryan will cheat a bit but he should not. Since he’s playing against the girls, maybe he wants to win but I think he does that in school also which is not good. I think this is his one bad habit that I need to change. You don’t cheat and win. You don’t lie and win.

You can tell the difference between boys and girls when they are playing. You can spend 20 minutes with the boys and 20 minutes with the girls. You may have fun with the boys but you realise life is best with the women and so I like to be with girls. And I want them to be really tough. At least the girls whom I know, they should be tough and should kick all these idiots around. Guys are a little dumb. I am sorry, I may lose some male fans but the girls rock!

I beat my children, fair and square, when we’re playing. I love them the most. I am the gentlest father. I could never ever hurt them in my life. I don’t think I love anything in this world more than my children. But I am ready to beat them fair and square – and I am very very thrilled if they beat me. Like I said, I am not talking about competition in films, I am talking about my own children. But it will take them a long long time to beat me.

I like kids; I like the company of kids more than adults. I don’t do baby talk with kids. I think they need to be treated like, you know, how you would treat a normal guy and that turns out best.

In a strange sense, as wrong and politically incorrect as it may sound, I like kids how Michael Jackson liked kids. I really understand it. I mean, for years I have understood. Obviously we are from different cultures. We think differently, we behave differently but I fully understand it and appreciate it because I am like that. I can spend the whole day, a whole month in a room full of kids. As a matter of fact, I remember when my own children were small, when Aryan was just five or six, I shared my biggest depression with them. I don’t like to talk to people about my sadness and I think the only people I have spoken to and that too when they did not understand anything were Aryan and Suhana. I sat them down and told them I am really sad while they rolled all over me.

One of the fears all big stars have is what happens when all this ends. I think the cutest thing that my kids have made me feel is this: I don’t have that fear anymore. I have this fantastic plan when all this ends. I have the hugest thing to look forward – which is just being with my kids. Maybe they won’t have time for me though. Well, I will bring them up in such a way that they will bring me to Hyde Park when I am 65 and play football with me.

I can see myself at 72 when my son is giving me the cycle or a wheelchair. And I am convinced that my daughter will take me to Hamleys and say, let’s go and buy you a book. Or she’ll say, listen, I have got an interview at 5:30 and after that you come and meet me at Waterstone’s. She might be 35 that time but I know she will take out time for me. I think it’s one of the nicest things that will happen to me.

“Nobody in my house treats me like a star”
SRK was on a year-end vacation to Dubai with his family when we requested a short interview. Though he was on holiday, he agreed and we did this quick Q&A over the phone. Even as he spoke, one could hear kids shouting and yelling in the background – clearly having a great time. Shah Rukh told us that his wife and in-laws had gone out, but he’d preferred to stay back with the kids and their friends.

Excerpts from the interview:

What’s it been like, doing this show for Discovery Travel & Living?
Actually I don’t understand why people want to see my personal life. But it hasn’t been too difficult. If I found the crew intrusive, I’d just tell them and they wouldn’t shoot. Like I don’t like to be shot while I’m eating, so they didn’t do that.

You come across as such a devoted father. But is it really possible for Shah Rukh Khan the star to be a normal dad?
When my kids were much younger, they used to get scared when people would rush up to me. They also found it odd that their classmates referred to me by my name. Today of course they know. But they don’t think of me as anyone special. That has to do with my wife actually, nobody at home treats me like a star. My kids wouldn’t even see KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) regularly on TV when I was hosting it.

I’m a little reclusive. I hate going out. I’d rather not go to a party. Even now, seven-eight of them (kids) are around. Everyone else has gone out but I’ve stayed back with them.

Even my meetings… I did a meeting with Lalit (Modi) at an amusement park in Austria. We were there for three hours with all the kids in that park. Tomorrow I have a couple of meetings in the Water World park here.

This year I’ve mostly been home because of my injury so I’ve been able to spend a lot of time with my kids. It keeps me young. The other day I was with Yashji and he suddenly hugged me and said, ‘You’re 44 years old but you’re just like a kid!’

I know your kids are, well, just kids right now, but is it a foregone conclusion that they will also get into films?
I don’t know yaar. They’re really into sports. They’re playing all the time and look dirty and unkempt. That’s the way I like them. It’s their choice. They have to be passionate about acting if they want to take it up. Actually we don’t even say it as a joke ki bade hoke hero banega.

My son is becoming kinder to me now because he knows how important movies are for me. They like me to do action. I try and select films which will appeal to my children. When I did Chak De! India, I got 30 kids to see the film. They laughed, they clapped – and I knew the film would do well. When people come to me and say, my child sings your song, I know that that particular song will turn out to be a big hit.

You’re hardly doing any films these days. There’s just My Name Is Khan…
I got injured, and so had a lay off for a year. I’m feeling better now. In February I’m starting Ra.1, which will finish by June-July. Then in July, I might do a small film. In September I start shooting for Don II.

My Name Is Khan is so different. I think audiences outgrow similar kind of filmmaking. Om Shanti Om was an in-your-face commercial movie. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was about a regular guy. My Name Is Khan is about an underdog who triumphs. Ra.1 is about a superhero who can fly around. It’s a film very close to my heart. It’s being done by Anubhav Sinha. I’m also having meetings with Vishal (Bhardwaj) and Anurag Basu. Inshallah, something will come out of these meetings.

'Everybody has a cool van. so my wife said to me, why don’t you get yourself a nice van?’

Time starts when I come to a place. I am not bound by time, otherwise I would never manage. I am never on time for meetings and I am very proud of it or at least I am not ashamed of it. I am disorganised about time but I know I manage to meet 85,000 people in a year. Genuinely, I am able to talk to 45 filmmakers in a year. I am able to do three films in a year. I am able to spend great quality time with my children. I am able to give full attention to my wife and my sister. I am able to do everything that I wish to do. So I have actually in a certain sense, conquered time which makes me feel sometimes that I may have conquered death, but that’s not going to happen. But I have conquered time.

My wife and kids actually started making me do this (waving to fans outside his house, Mannat). They said these people keep waiting, you should wave out to them when you are at home. So I did. I feel humble, I don’t feel any iconic status because of this.

It’s not a feeling which you can really express. I show a lot of graciousness and gratitude and say that it makes me feel really good, and it does. It makes me feel wanted, it does. It makes me love, it does. But I don’t know how to express it.

This is the closest anyone who does not know me, gets to see me really. And I want them to know that there is nothing special about this. I don’t dress up for this occasion and give a speech. If it continues for another ten years, maybe I will start out speaking to people through a megaphone. If I had a choice, I would start dancing out there and let them have a great entertaining evening. I am actually planning to make a little place there so that they can see me better. Put on a little music and do a little dance for them. So that they go back home with some experience.

A van has become a big thing for stars lately. Everybody has a cool van. So my wife said, why don’t you get yourself a van? You deserve it. You work very hard. So you must have a nice looking van.

So I had these people, like Dilip Chabbria, they were really sweet and they said that we’ve always liked you and we have always been wondering what we can do for you. We’re gonna design a very cool van for you. So it’s very cool, it stretches out. It’s really long. I still don’t know what to do with the second half of the van. I have a gym. I have a bathroom now which is clean and nice. I can keep my Ralph Lauren towels there, so it is nice. Feels like a star. I have a watch, which I can’t read without my glasses. I have my family’s picture which is very nice.

I have a computer and the seat moves. So whenever I sit on it and press the button, I feel like I am Don. I can hear the Don music, and if I wear dark glasses, I may have to shoot you if you enter. I have a bed which comes out, but I haven’t used that. None of the actresses have agreed to utilise it with me. I have come to the conclusion that it’s not the van that makes the man. It’s the man who makes the van.

Sometimes, a scene comes in me, goes within. I know I have lost a little bit of myself that day. In every film that I do, there are one or two shots I am very passionate about. Sorry, I may sound silly but I live a part of me in every film. I wake up every morning with this fear that, will there be a day when I’ll wake up and find I have nothing more to give? I have done 65 films, so even if I go by one per cent, then I have already given 65 per cent. So I am like, will there be a day when there will be nothing more to give? Will there be a day when I’ll be completely hollow and empty? Will there be a day when I will be really attempting to cry and I will cry but nobody will feel it and cry with me? Will there be a day when I will not have a third dimension left?

Shah Rukh Khan, the pains and failures of 2009 behind him if not entirely forgotten, is looking forward to the New Year because it brings with it the imminent release and promise of the biggest film of his career (his words, not mine) – Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan.

He’s had a bad year starting with the shoulder injury and surgery, then the uninspiring box-office returns for Billu – his only release in 2009, and finally the humiliating decimation of his IPL team in South Africa. But, as the poet T. S. Eliot famously wrote, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice”... and SRK, I suspect, is secretly hoping that the next voice cinema audiences will listen to is going to be his in 2010. Or rather Rizwan Khan’s, the autistic character he plays in My Name Is Khan, which is slated for a grand bi-lingual worldwide release in February.

Actually, the character in this ambitious film suffers from asperger’s syndrome, an autistic disorder whose main symptom is a difficulty in social interaction. It is a role that Shah Rukh, who is notoriously among Bollywood’s least social people, must have slipped into with consummate ease. Over a glass of tea in his vanity van one night late at Mehboob Studios, I asked him whether audiences were ready for another challenged hero after Bachchan with progeria in Paa and, before that, Aamir with dyslexia in Taare Zameen Par.

Shah Rukh replied, “Audiences understand what you tell them. People like a good story. And this is a joyous film with a new romantic thought, the journey of an ordinary man. It is a love story with an epic feel. All love stories have obstacles, but the obstacle in My Name Is Khan is real, it happens in everyday life. For me, the film was an opportunity to play a challenged character... bahut maaza aaya!”

What he was saying was contrary to public belief that the film is based on terrorism. Shah Rukh scowled. “I don’t know where you got that idea,” he said in exasperation, “yes, it is set in the aftermath of 9/11, and it is heroic without the fighting and screaming, but My Name Is Khan is a heartening and even funny film... even though we didn’t try to make a funny film! I am excited about it as I am about all my films. But this one I’m very proud of. Mainly because I’ve co-produced it with Karan. Also because Kajol and I are acting together after eight years.” He’s not seen a trial of the film as yet to voice an opinion on how well it will do at the box-office. That Shah Rukh never does. Not for his own films nor anybody else’s. In fact, he said he’s hardly seen any of his films completely. “Trials mean analysis,” he explained, “but trial reactions are different from theatre reactions. I don’t make a film for myself, I make it for the story. Besides, I’m shy of myself on screen, I’m not vain, it’s just that I’m not fond of my face or physique. Maybe that’s why I’m an actor – so that I can play someone else.”

Perhaps, he was still in character for the film. Or, maybe, interacting with people is as much a problem for Shah Rukh Khan in real life as it is for Rizwan Khan in reel. “I’m not anti-social,” he protested, “I’m a quiet
person, strangely reclusive, I’m not as confident as you think I am. I have issues. I’m thankful to Allah... to be not so gifted and have all this. It may sound pompous, but I’m great enough to be humble, I’m very happy when people say ‘SRK’s the best’... there is a sense of achievement, I’m happy by what I’ve done, but humble enough to know it’s not because of me. Yet put me on stage, say, at Salt Lake Stadium before a million people and I will comfortably entertain you for an hour. As long as I’m an entertainer, I have no problems. It’s when I’m Shah Rukh Khan that the problems arise. I’m a fun guy... yet my kids enjoy their mother’s company more.”

PVR Juhuの一スクリーンを貸し切りにして、家族、子供と友人とで「Avatar」を観賞したそうです。

My Name is Khan can't compete at Berlin
「MNIK」はベルリン映画祭に出品されるけど、コンペティション分門への参加は拒否されたようです。理由は不明。

「MNIK」についてカランもフォックス側も「テロリズムを扱った映画ではない」「バックグラウンドとして9.11が存在してはいるけど、「MNIK」はラブストーリーだ」と、口を揃えてコメントしています。

Who is your favorite star?
My favorite star is Shahrukh Khan. There's no doubt about it. He is special to me personally and professionally. I do have the highest regards for all the best actors of this country. The legend in this country is Mr. Amitabh Bachchan as he proved in Paa that he can do anything. Probably at that age I'll be living under an MRI. The passion, intensity and regularity with which he works makes him awesome. But my favorite will always be SRK as I have shaped my career with him by my side.

アビシェーク・バッチャン主演「GURU」をDVDで見ました。

2007年製作、マニ・ラトナム監督作品。

田舎育ちの男グルカント・デサイ通称グルの、立身出世もの。
官僚や金持ち層にだけ独占されていたビジネスに平民が切り込んでいって、
時には正当でない手段も使うけど、やがてビッグになっていくというのが基本ストーリー。

海外でビジネスを学んだグルは、「白人のためでなく自分のために働きたい」とインドに帰り、
一般庶民を株主にして資金を集め、ポリエステルの輸入を行う貿易会社を設立する。
ハードワークの末、やがて企業は貿易会社にとどまらず巨大なグループ企業へと成長した。
だがグルは金を儲けるためなら手段を選ばず、マスコミからは叩かれるようになった。
市民も「詐欺だったのか」「金を返せ」と非難の声を上げはじめる。
そして政府からも目を付けられて、裁判ざたに。
脳卒中で右半身不随になりながらも出廷したグルは、一部の特権階級だけに支配されるシステムに反対の声を上げ、その主張は市民からの支持を得ることに成功した。

…って大筋の話です。
いや～～映画も良かったがアビシェクがよかった！！
パワフルで説得力のある演技で、これはいいねーーー！！！

グルの妻スジャータ（アイシュワリヤ・ラーイ、今はアビシェクの奥さん）との関係もよかった～～。
最初は、グルがビジネスを起こすに当たっての資金繰りのため、
スジャータと結婚すれば持参金をたくさんもらえるからという目的での結婚だったんだけど、
あちこちで愛情を感じるシーンがありましたよ。
結婚したばかりの奥さんを置いて、都会へ仕事に出ようという駅でのシーンがスキｖｖ

スジャータ「私を置いていくのね」
グル「だって行きたくないって言ったじゃないか」
ス「なんでもう一度聞いてくれなかったの」
グ「そんな」
ス「今だって行くかとは聞いてくれないじゃない」
グ「だってチケットは」
ス「あなたの膝に座っていくのに、チケットが要るの？」
グ「荷物もないし」
ス「サリーの４枚も買ってくれれば充分」
グ「…じゃあ、おいで」

そんで、着の身着のままで電車に乗り込んじゃうんだよーｖ　

そして後半、裁判所のシーンもよかった。
もういい年になったグル夫妻が出廷、半身の不自由な夫をスジャータが支えながら。
関係者以外の退室を求められたけど、スジャータは部屋に残り
「会社の50％は私の所有です。私も残ります」と言う。
そして「あなたも同様に罪に問われるのですよ」と告げられても、動じない。
いや～いいシーンだ。しみじみと夫婦愛だ。

愛情を一本柱に据えながらも、基本は出世モノで、
いつまでもインドが第三諸国扱いでいいのか！
世界のトップとも対等にやりあえる国になってやろうじゃないか！という
プライドのびしばし伝わってくる映画でした。

Georgetown University in USA has come out with a list of 500 of the world's most influential Muslims, including Shahrukh Khan, former Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam, and composer A R Rahman. A chat with SRK on how he feels about being in that list:

Buzz up!How do you feel on being the only one from the entertainment world being selected in the top 500 besides A R Rahman?

I don't think a list of this nature is of a competitive type to feel proud about. It's not about a list of awards that I have won. I am a Muslim by birth and because of the kind of cinema I do, I assume must be influencing lives of people across the world. I have been actively working in the film industry for 18 years and my work has gone across the world, my films and done well in many places including Germany, Poland, Dubai, USA, Morocco and South East Asia. People know me well because of my films but I never felt that I was different. I'm in the field of mass communication and am doing my work. That's it.

Why do you feel you were chosen?

I think it could be because of the kind of films I do. I try to do films that have variety and are about goodness and hope. They give a direction to a life. I have done films on romances to patriotic dramas like Chak De! and funny entertainers like Om Shanti Om — films that try to give a kind of positive message to people. I hope in this I am able to influence the lives of many, especially youngsters and children. It's about giving some kind of direction to their lives. Like I might tell my children to study hard or teach them how to lead a good life.

What do you feel is your contribution as an educated liberal Muslim in the world today?

These are categories I am not comfortable with as I don't think I have done much to justify the tags. Though I am very proud to be a Muslim and an educated and liberal one at that, I am immensely proud to be Indian. I have very strong views on religion and how people should behave but that's about it. I just do my work. I truly believe your work defines you. I am not a social activist. I spend time with my family. At the most, I teach my kids to do namaaz and pray to Allah. Maybe I have given neat and clean hits which has given me money and fame but for me it's been like a good regular job. I have chosen to do cinema which has a very positive impact and that's what influences people and gets me the tags.

Your next film is My Name Is Khan. Do you feel it's a more international film which should be seen by all and will have a far-reaching influence?

I have never been a strong advocate for global cinema because I don't think our films turn the tide around though my directors and distributors feel otherwise. Having said that, I will add that MNIK is a very special topic about humanity in the garb of a Muslim character. The basic tenet of any religion — be it of Allah, God or Bhagwan — is that you have to be a good human being and Khan in MNIK is one. The way Karan has handled his love story in a dramatised form is amazing. It's a love story where the character has to overcome obstacles in the path of love and that obstacle is the world view. How he overcomes that to win his love is what MNIK is about. The film is made on a large canvas and made larger with Fox coming on board. The subject material is adapted in terms of humanity in a very entertaining way. And with Karan, the best filmmaker in India today directing the film and Fox distributing it — the message of love, the way it has been shot internationally and the way of releasing it, might have all the possibilities of an international release. It's going to be released in a way no Hindi film has been released internationally before with mega prints and the trailer releasing with Avatar in a first of its kind.

To you, who's the most influential person in the world?

Like every movie star's influence changes with every B-O release, I think even across the globe people's influence changes. Today, there is not just one global influence but a collective of influences. I don't believe the world can be run by one influential person right now. The world has become too intelligent to be demarcated by one person. It's the good thoughts of many. Like Bill Gates, Mukesh Ambani, Obama are very influential and wonderful in their field of work but collectively, they are fantastic.

To you, what is true power or influence?

For me, in means to be able to affect people in a positive manner and bring a smile on their faces. It should be able to affect young minds in a good sense.

The music of My Name is Khan releases today. Karan Johar tells us five things that everyone wants to know about the film.....

How long do you plan to work only with Shah Rukh Khan considering that actors have a limited shelf life, unlike directors?

I have never worked without him and I have no clue what the experience will be like. I do my best work when Shah Rukh is on the sets as there is this tremendous sense of comfort when he is around and I feel that everything will be fine and fun on the sets. I think I will be working with him for the rest of my life as we have this special connection not only personally but also professionally. We understand each other very well, he is a member of my family and vice versa.

Don't you think that right now the audience wants to watch entertaining films while yours is a serious film?

Well, I don't know as I never calculate anything as far as creativity goes. I know that I have made a film with my heart, soul and a lot of passion. My entire team- SRK, Kajol, Ravi Chandran, Shibani, Deepa, Sharmistha and everybody else- has really toiled to make it a soulful venture. I firmly believe that emotions are universal and I know that when they connect with the audience, it works. There is no such thing as an entertaining or a serious film; there are good films and bad films. Good films will always find a vast audience.

Your last film Kurbaan had a terrorism backdrop and was promoted as a love story, which clearly did not work. Do you plan to have a different strategy for the promotion of My Name is Khan?

There is nothing about terrorism in Khan. It is a soulful emotional journey about a man who is all for love and that's exactly how we are promoting the film. I certainly have no idea why the rumours about terrorism in Khan are doing the rounds.

My Name is Khan releases on February 12. Do you think it's the ideal release date considering its Valentine's Day week and youngsters would want to see a romantic film?

Absolutely! Khan's core content is a love story. The entire journey is the love story between Rizwan and Mandira, my protagonists. What better time than the Valentine's Day week for the release of this love story about two people who go through so much in life for love.

My Name is Khan will have the biggest release till date, even overseas. Do you think it's the right strategy?

We have a great partnership with Fox Searchlight and it is their strategy to have a platform release, which is what they call such a release. They believe that My Name is Khan has a market way beyond what’s expected and it is their strategy to break certain boundaries of exhibition for this film. They have full faith in the film and I hope their faith pays off. The real work for any filmmaker stars after he finishes directing a film. I spent two years making the film but most of my efforts for the next two months will go in the promotion, marketing and connecting with the audience.

MNIK is a soulful emotional journey about a man who is all for love

Premiere league
My Name is Khan will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on February 12. It is expected to be screened at one of Berlin's most important locations, Potsdamer Platz. Incidentally, it is the first Indian film to be premiered in Berlin.

字幕はアップしてから表示されるまで、数時間待たないといけないようですね？

My Name Is Khan and I am not a terrorist...this line from the First Look promo of Shahrukh-Kajol propelled 'My Name Is Khan' hits you with an incredible force that sends shivers of goose pimples within. Obviously the paramount question is that whether the SRK-Kajol chemistry works magic again. Yes, it does...Big Time. It seems the duo are meant to fall in love and transmit that love-electricity on celluloid to millions of people across the world.

MNIK promo successfully opens a window to what the basic story is, whips up an engaging drama and leaves you panting for more. Rizwan's (Shahrukh) disability is blanketed by Mandira's (Kajol) overwhelmingly deep affection. How 9/11 changes lives forever and for some strange innocent reason Rizwan wants to meet up with the President Of America. There's a strong resistance and guns blaze on the roads of suspicion.

There are two significant lines that stay with you when the promo is over. First one is: He believed that if you do good deeds...good things will happen to you. And the second is: We are stronger than our fears. It seems that the Writing will be the strong point of 'My Name Is Khan' and undoubtedly Karan Johar is treading a territory that in all probability will enrich the Indian film industry.

The production design looks top notch, cinematography is world class and the look of both Shahrukh and Kajol is different from what we've seen them in before. There's a small section of a song 'Noor-e-Khuda' which comes at the beginning of the promo and it seems Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have redeemed themselves after an average 'London Dreams'. The background score sounds very engaging too.

Kajol's breakdown scene sends chills down your spine. What a volcano of a talent she is. Shahrukh's intense sincerity binds your attention from the first frame of the promo till its last. This may be the turning point in the career of Shahrukh Khan, the fantastic actor, who amazed earlier with magnificence in Chak De India.

It goes without saying that the First Look promo of 'My Name Is Khan' whets your appetite for the real thing. One of the finest First Look promos in recent times.

ローハン・シッピー（Rohan Sippy）製作のタイトル未定作品についての記事。
この作品はゴアが舞台のドラッグを扱った犯罪もので、アビシェク・バッチャンが主演だが、相手役となる主役級の役者がなかなか決まらない。ファルハーン・アクタルに断られ、今回エムラーン・ハスミにも断られた。
関係者は「主役のアビシェクに劣らず重要な役なのに、断るなんて」とコメント。
現在アルジュンにオファーがいっていると記事では報じられてます。

記事の雰囲気からすると、黒アルジュンな役っぽいですね。まだ未定事項ですが、期待！！

先日、シャールクが75歳に！って記事になってましたが
もうCMもできたのか～、早い！
じじいになってもあいかわらず、という演技で、
見ているこっちもにこにこになってしまいます。
本人はインタビューで
「年をとって俳優ができなくなっても、カメラマンでもなんでも、
何かしら映画に関わる仕事をしていたい」
と言ってました。
「仕事を辞めたらのんびり暮らす」という選択肢はないんですねえ、やっぱり（笑）

プロモのファーストルックは12月16日午後10時（インド時間）。
全スターチャンネルネットワークにて公開されるそうです。

皆様にご挨拶申し上げます。

私は近頃、頻繁に訊ねられることがあります。おそらくみなさんも同じことを訊ねられるのでしょうが…それは、テロリズムについてどんな意見を持っているか？という問いです。この質問はとても奇妙だという気がします。なぜならテロリズムに対して、意見の相違などありうるはずがないからです。おそらく人々は、私がムスリムだから、私の意見が彼らのものと同じかどうか確かめようとして訊ねるのでしょう。

私は子供のころからコーランについて教えられてきました。その考えを理解するよう、また神が教える道を歩くように努力してきました。私はよきムスリムであることを、とても、とても誇りに思っています。しかしこの国から私は同時に、たくさんのことを学んできました。
私が生まれ育った場所ではシャルマ師のような方から、ギーター（訳注1）を教えられました。近所のラーム・リーラ（訳注2）では猿の軍隊の、猿の役を演じました（訳注3）。学校ではキリスト教の教えを教わりました。友人と共に仏教に基づいた映画（訳注4）を作りましたし、私の妻はパンジャブ人でヒンドゥー教徒です。
これらすべての関係と友情を通じて、私はより良い人間に、そしてインド人になりました。そして私はインド人であることをとても、とても誇りに思っています。

インド文明は宗教という点において区別をしません。独自性と相違点を称賛し、すべての信仰をその血流の中に受け入れます。これは自分たちにとって善き手本であるだけでなく、世界にあっては不可能とも思える功績でもあるのです。そしてそれこそが、私が一インド人であることを、とても、とても誇りに感じる理由なのです。

この国の自由の戦士（訳注5）だった私の父は、私にたくさんのことを教えてくれました。宗教は互いに争うことなど教えてはいない、イシュワール（訳注6）とアラー（訳注7）は共に神の名前である、など……あなたがたもきっと、こういったことを何度も耳にしたことがあるはずです。しかし私たちが子供のころから学んできたこれらの教訓、物語や詩歌は、今の時代にあっては何の意味もありません。なぜなら何千年もの苦闘の末、正しく生きる術を我々に示そうと懸命に努力し続けてきた我々の宗教、それら全ての宗教が悪魔と怪物を抱え込んでいるからです。その怪物たちは独自の宗教を作り上げるに至り、そしてそれは「テロリズム」と呼ばれています。

すべての文明的な宗教が生命を尊重し祝福するのに対して、この野蛮な恐怖の宗教は、ただひとつ死だけに執着します。不幸なことに、今、すべての人の信仰は課題に直面しています。しかし幸いにも我々は、滅ぼすか、滅ぼされるか、どちらかを選ぶことができます。
ほんのかすかな恐怖の気配であっても、思想によって、また行動によってそれを根絶し、消し去るよう努めることは、我々のすべての信仰の責務だと、私は信じています。さもなければ、すべての人間性が絶滅することを許容するしかありません。
私たちはこの機会に立ち上がるだろうと、私は信じています。なぜなら「私は死にたくない」という考えは必然だからです。そして、あなたがたも死にたくはないでしょうし、来るべき時の前に、家族を失いたくはないはずです。
私は生きたい。私たちみんな生き、私たちみんな信じたい…子供のころに教えられたこと、すなわち、より高い基準の行いと人生を得ることが、どんな名で彼に呼びかけようと、神を信じることの核心であると。そしてこの問題において、どこの誰も意見の相違を持ち得ないでしょう。

ここで皆さんの前に立ち、一人一人のインド人のため、私は神に祈ります。我々の人生が幸福と善きことにみたされ、そして我々が安全であるように。そしてそれは成就するでしょう…私たちが協力し、テロリズムに立ち向かう限り。ありがとうございました。

Greetings to everyone.

I'm often asked nowadays, probably you are asked the same thing – what is your opinion of terrorism? I find this a very strange question because no one can have a difference of opinion on terrorism. Maybe because I'm a Muslim people ask me to make sure my opinion is the same as their's.

I've been taught the Quran from childhood and I've made an effort to understand it and to walk the path that Allah has taught us. I'm very, very proud to be a good Muslim. But this country has also taught me a lot of things. In the street that I lived, people like Sharma ji have taught me the Gita. In my neighborhood Ram Lilas I've played the role of a monkey in the monkey army. I was taught Christianity in my school. I made a film on Buddhism with my friends and my wife is a Punjabi Hindu. Through all these relationships and friendships I’ve become a better human being. I've become an Indian and I'm very, very proud to be an Indian.

Indian civilization does not distinguish in terms of religion. It celebrates uniqueness, differences and absorbs all faiths in its bloodstream. We’re not just an example to ourselves; we are an impossible achievement in the world. And that’s why I feel I'm very, very proud to be an Indian.

My father was a freedom fighter of this country and he taught me many things like – religions don’t teach you to quarrel with each other, Ishwar and Allah, both are God’s names. You also must have heard this many times. But all these lessons we learnt from childhood, all these stories and poems, don’t mean anything in today’s times because after thousands of years of struggle, our religions which have tried so hard to show us the right way to live, all these religions have devils and monsters who have made their own religion and I feel that religion is called ‘terrorism’

While all civilized religions respect and celebrate life this barbaric terror religion loves only death. Unfortunately all human faiths now face a challenge. But fortunately for all of us we also have a choice. And the choice is to destroy or perish. I believe it’s the moral duty of all our religious beliefs to inspire with all its power to root out and wipe out the slightest trace of terror in thought and deed or else accept annihilation of all humanity. I'm sure we will all rise to the occasion because though it is inevitable I don’t want to die. And I'm sure you don’t want to die or lose our families before time. I want to live, we all want to live and we all want to believe what we were taught in our childhood – that the whole point of believing in God by whatever name we address Him is to have a higher standard of behavior and life. And on this issue, no one anywhere can have a difference of opinion.

Standing here before you, for each and every Indian, I pray to God that our lives are filled with happiness, goodness and we are safe. And it will be so as long as we are together and face terrorism together. Thank you very much everyone.
